Following the White Line is certainly the right direction for the best of British Light Music! There have been no fewer than 17 great releases over the past couple of years, including four volumes of British Light Music Discoveries, and programmes with concertos by Horovitz, Lambert and Gardner. Now, following on from English Oboe Concertos, we have the second of a series of concerto concerts, each featuring a different solo instrument.

English Bassoon Concertos presents the world premiere recordings of music by a quartet of first-rate English 20th century composers. The earliest piece is the Bassoon Concerto Eric Fogg wrote for Archie Camden in 1931. It is the best work, lyrical and lively, of a fine composer who was only 36 when he tragically committed suicide. The first of two Concertinos is from John Addison, best known as the Oscar-winning composer of the film-score to Tom Jones. His genial offering was premiered by Graham Salvage in 1998. Peter Hope's Concertino was written just last year, and features a jazzy blues slow movement and a Latin-American fiesta of a finale. Lastly, the lyrical, plaintive and melancholy essence of the bassoon's nature is perfectly matched by Arthur Butterworth's concerto Summer Music, evoking the sun and wind on the high hills of his native Yorkshire Moors. Butterworth himself conducts this performance.

The brilliant soloist is Suffolk-born Graham Salvage, making his ASV debut with the stalwart partnership of Gavin Sutherland and the Royal Ballet Sinfonia.
The companion Oboe Concertos disc (CD WHL 2130) has proved to be one of the year's most thoroughly enjoyable issues, and further releases in the series are eagerly awaited.
