Gavin Sutherland was born in County Durham and was active in amateur music groups from a very early age. He studied conducting, piano and orchestration at Huddersfield University and graduated with first class honours, as well as gaining the Kruczynski Prize for Piano and the Davidson Prize for Distinction Brought to the Institution.
Music for dance has played a very important part in Gavin's career. He began working with the Northern Ballet Theatre in 1992, first as a pianist then as a staff conductor. He moved to London in 1998 to pursue freelance activities as a composer, arranger, pianist and conductor. On the basis of his first CD, the critically acclaimed British Light Music Discoveries (ASV CD WHL 2116), Gavin began a healthy relationship with the Royal Ballet Sinfonia in its roles on the concert platform, in the recording studio and as the orchestra of Birmingham Royal Ballet (involving both national and international tours). As a conductor for dance, he has also guest conducted frequently for English National Ballet, Atlanta Ballet, Adventures in Motion Pictures, the Royal New Zealand Ballet and Northern Ballet Theatre.
His many recordings have been made all over the world, especially with the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra (including The Carry On Album, ASV CD WHL 2119, which went straight into the charts). He has also guest conducted the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, the North of England Concert Orchestra, the Wellington Sinfonia, the Auckland Philharmonia and the Australian Philharmonic Orchestra amongst others. In addition he conducts the Capriol Chamber Orchestra, and in May 2001, on the basis of accompanying the RNZB's Melbourne season of Dracula, Gavin began another lasting releationship, with the Australian Pops Orchestra, for whom he conducts regularly and has supplied many arrangements.
In addition to his work as a conductor, Gavin is becoming increasingly known as a composer/ arranger, and his work is heard worldwide. Recent projects have included a new arrangement of Giselle for the Norwegian National Ballet, a musical, Little Women, which premiered in London in 2000, extensive work for orchestral education projects and a one-act ballet, Revolting Rhymes, for the New Zealand School of Dance.
